Santander appoints digital banking specialist to lead Spanish business

MADRID (Reuters) – Santander has appointed former ING executive Ignacio Julia to take over as chief executive of its Spanish business to advance the bank’s digital drive.

Julia, who will replace Angel Rivera on Oct. 1, played a key role in ING’s development as the first digital bank in Spain and will help Santander with the implementation of global platforms.

Rivera joined Santander in April 2013 as head of distribution for the Spanish branch network in Spain and will remain at the bank until the end of the year to support the transition.

Santander raised its profitability guidance in July on strong growth at its main retail business, especially in Spain and Brazil.
