Tshisekedi to join regional summit on eastern Congo conflict

(Reuters) -Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi will participate in a joint summit of Eastern and Southern African leaders in Tanzania on February 7-8 to discuss the conflict in eastern Congo, his spokesperson said on Thursday.

Rwandan-backed M23 rebels on Wednesday seized another mining town in South Kivu province in a southward push towards the provincial capital Bukavu, violating a unilateral ceasefire they declared this week.

Presidential spokesperson Tina Salama told Reuters Tshisekedi would take part in the summit, without specifying whether he would fly to Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salam or attend virtually.

Rwanda’s Foreign Minister said on Monday President Paul Kagame was also expected to attend the summit.
