Volkswagen to lay off 1,600 staff at Cariad software unit, Handelsblatt reports

BERLIN (Reuters) -Volkswagen plans to lay off 1,600 staff at its Cariad software unit by the end of the year, the Handelsblatt business daily reported on Tuesday, citing company sources.

The layoffs, impacting almost 30% of the 5,900 people employed at Cariad, are to mainly take place via redundancy programmes, the report added.

Handelsblatt said the company confirmed the information.

In an emailed statement to Reuters, Volkswagen said it was implementing a “transformation plan” for Cariad agreed in 2023.

“Last year, we already made the organisation more efficient as an internal software solutions developer with higher in-house performance and are now also adjusting the number of employees accordingly,” a spokesperson for the company said.
