Uganda September coffee exports surge 59% on bumper crop

KAMPALA (Reuters) -Uganda’s September coffee exports jumped 59% year-on-year, boosted by a copious crop in parts of the East African nation, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday.

In September, Africa’s largest coffee exporter shipped 844,949 60-kg bags of the beans, compared with 532,212 bags exported in the same period last year, the ministry said in a report.

Coffee and gold are Uganda’s largest sources of foreign exchange. The agriculture ministry projects coffee production will rise 15% in the crop year that started this month.

“Coffee export volume was higher than the previous year on account of increased coffee production as the harvest in Central and Eastern regions is already underway,” the report said.

Uganda earned $2.2 billion from coffee exports in the 12 months to September, up 57% from the same period a year ago, according to data from the ministry.
