SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Singapore’s Tuas Power is targeting operation of its 133 megawatts (MW) coal-fired power plant fully on biomass by 2028, the company said in a statement on Thursday.
Tuas Power, which has a generating capacity of 2,670 MW and accounts for a fifth of the city state’s electricity demand, is also exploring clean energy imports and renewable projects to reduce the emissions intensity of its operations, it said.
The combined cycle plant at the Tembusu Multi-utilities complex currently operates at a coal-to-biomass ratio of 70:30, the company said, adding that it has been steadily increasing the use of imported wood pellets and palm kernel shells, and locally sourced wood chips.
“The company is in active discussions with more consumers to expand offtake agreements and ensure the conversion remains commercially sustainable,” it said.
