Spain nominates gender-based violence specialist as next chief prosecutor

MADRID (Reuters) -Spain’s government nominated Teresa Peramato, a specialist in the law around gender-based violence, as the next chief prosecutor on Tuesday, a day after the resignation of the previous incumbent who had been found guilty in a leak case.

* Peramato, a career prosecutor with 35 years’ experience,”has the unanimous recognition of legal professionals”, theJustice Ministry said. * The ministry highlighted Peramato’s long track record infighting gender-based violence and described her as one of thedrivers of judicial specialisation in this field. * The pick is expected to be scrutinised by the opposition,which had accused her predecessor of being a political operativelacking impartiality. * Peramato, 63, would be the fourth person to fill the postsince Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez rose to power in 2018. * The cabinet’s pick must still be reviewed by the judges’ruling body, the CGPJ, which will issue a non-bindingrecommendation. * Then the nominee will face a confirmation hearing inSpain’s lower house before King Felipe formally appointsPeramato as new chief prosecutor.
