UK government gives new powers to mayors in England to introduce travel levy

LONDON (Reuters) -The British government plans to hand new powers to local mayors in England to introduce a new levy on visitors’ overnight trips, it said on Tuesday, a day before the annual budget.

Under the proposals, any new levy would apply to visitors at accommodation providers including hotels, holiday lets, bed and breakfasts, and guesthouses, the government said in a statement, adding that it would be up to mayors and other local leaders to introduce such a charge.
