(Reuters) -Britain’s competition watchdog said on Wednesday it would reconsider Spreadex’s completed acquisition of Sporting Index’s consumer-facing arm after the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) overturned its previous decision.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) had asked Spreadex to sell the business it bought from Sporting Index in 2023 after concerns that the deal would harm competition in the market for licensed online sports spread-betting.
Spreadex had appealed the CMA’s decision with the CAT which was upheld on March 4, requiring the regulator to re-investigate the deal, the CMA said.
“We hope that in this new review, the CMA will be able to reach a .. decision that best serves the interest of Sporting Index, its customers, and the wider UK economy,” a spokesperson for Spreadex said in an emailed statement to Reuters.
