ALMATY (Reuters) – Kazakhstan’s president has appointed Erlan Akkenzhenov to be the Central Asian country’s minister of energy, according to a presidential decree published on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan’s ex-energy minister Almasadam Satkaliyev will stand down from his role and become the head of the newly- created atomic energy agency, the country’s presidential office said on Tuesday.
The changes come as the government struggles to convince U.S. and European oil companies to lower production that exceeds OPEC+ targets.
Kazakhstan has been producing at a record high, and well above its OPEC+ quota, as U.S. oil major Chevron expands output at the largest Kazakh oilfield, Tengiz.
