(Reuters) -Former finance minister George Osborne is among a small number of candidates being considered by the HSBC Holdings board as a potential successor to Sir Mark Tucker, who stepped down as its chairman in September, said a Sky News reporter via an X post on Saturday.
Osborne, who was finance minister from 2010 until he lost his job after the 2016 Brexit referendum, was approached during the summer about becoming the successor to Tucker, Sky News reported.
Former finance director of Barclays, Naguib Kheraj, and Kevin Sneader, the former McKinsey chief are also in contention, the report added.
Mark Tucker, the bank’s first-ever externally recruited chairman, stepped down on September 30 to be replaced by interim Chairman Brendan Nelson.
“Brendan Nelson became interim Group Chairman on 1 October. The process to appoint a new Group Chairman is underway and we will provide an update in due course,” an HSBC spokesperson told Reuters.
